Day's Top Five Internet Apps

In keeping with one of my recent posts...

5. Flickr
4. Facebook
3. Twitter
2. Blogger
1. gMail

I kinda feel like Facebook should be higher on the list, but I'm sick of it at the moment. In a few more months, I'll probably change my mind. Again.

top five things i'm frustrated with my dad about

5. Watching TV all day, everyday. Just sitting there, with the TV on. All day.
4. The endless jokes about how lazy I am. Okay, fine. I'm on vacation here.
3. If I could get him to stop saying 'Oriental' instead of Asian...it'd be a minor battle but a victorious one nevertheless.
2. I'd like to be myself at home. I really would like to open up. But all my jokes and stories are met with either offense or cold indifference.
1. I'm angry with him for looking so old. Daddies aren't supposed to get old.

Top Five Reasons Why It Sucks that Lorn's Computer is Broken:
5. Making treks to Library to use the internet is not as fun as it ought to be. This I know from experience, and I know Lorn realizes too.
4. Financially speaking, purchasing a computer (new or used) is a serious burden when you're a poor student.
3. Computers are necessary. These days, to be without a computer is to have half of your brain missing.
2. She's my No. 1 commenter. My comments will remain at zero far more often than I'd like.
1. Less frequent blog updates.

Top Five Ickiest Things I've Seen People do on the Subway:
5. When I was on the 7 in the morning, at the most packed time, I had the pleasure of standing right next to a man who proceded to loudly chew his minty gum right in my ear.
4. One time I sat next to a group of teenage boys on their way home from a practice or something. They were all chewing gum with their mouths open. It was annoying loud chewing.
3. I've seen people pick their noses, right there on the train. In public.
2. Some dude pulled out a nail clipper and went to work on his fingers. He just left his clippings all over the train floor.
1. I once saw a lady eating chicken wings. She was gnawing the meat right off the bone. This one probably takes the #1 spot because I'm a vegetarian. It was just gross.

Top Five Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Albums on my iPod:
5. Eminem, although I wouldn't say that I like any of his albums cover to cover. So I choose the playlist I made for him instead.
4. Xzibit-- Man Vs. Machine
3. Lauren Hill--Miseducation of Lauren Hill
2. OutKast-- Stankonia (minus the interlude tracks)
1. Anything produced by Dre.

5. You're doing this because you love it.
4. If it's shitty, there's always beer.
3. Do not let boys fuck with your emotional state.
2. Hug your kitties when things are rough.
1. Even if it isn't shitty, there's always beer.

Top Five Visions that Went Though my Head as the 7 Train Inexplicably Stopped Working Last Night

5. Walking home... for miles and miles
4. Using my super powers to bully an MTA employee in a desperate search for answers
3. Huddling into a ball and weeping on the train, thereby causing authorities to think I was somewhat crazy, then putting me in a cab to take me home
2. Throwing a firebomb into an empty train, and ducking for cover while it explodes, sending train bits scattering all over the tracks
1. A Giant Davis stomping on very small 7-train, a la King Kong

So you can see that I was very, very frustrated when the 7-train stopped running for half an hour last night at 10:30. Stupid 7-train. I want my car back!

Oct 12, 2006

Top Five Things...that are keeping me on my toes musically right now

5. Brass quintet- coachings scare me a little and my quintet members are very, very good. Unfortunately we need to work on our group attitude toward playing...le stressful.
4. Tbone quartet (now with a name!)- same reason, although coaching don't scare me, I just want to be on top of things. And I want to win win win competitions this year.
3. Prof gave me not one but two (2!) Bitsch etudes to work up this week. Just one of those usually takes me about a month to get right.
2. My friend Mark's octet. It's friggen sweet.
1. Maintaining the standard I've set so far this year. I think I'm playing pretty awesome and now I just have to keep it up. It only goes up from here!

Top Five Things...I want to get in the mail

5. Disc 7 of Evangelion. Holy McFriggen Cow. The last three episodes were so...good.
4. A random letter from someone.
3. Pumpkin raisin bars from my mommy.
2. $150 in checks from students and schools that owe me.
1. My BIG BAD ASS wall map of the world that I get for donating to KERA 90.1 (they carry NPR).

Top Five People I Need to Call:

5. Danielle and Chris, my long-time friends from Lockport IL. They also moved, and I doubt that I know their cell numbers anymore. Either way, I should find it and let them know I'm thinking of them.
4. Rachelle, my friend from K-zoo. She's recently made an equally big change, and I haven't been a good friend through all of this.
3. My Dad. I never talk to him. I'm not sure why. I think it's that he'll be TOO sympathetic to my worries, which might make me a little too panicky. Does that even make sense?
2. Ben. I'd like to convince him to start posting some top fives!
1. Lorn. I really, really want to talk to you, but I think our lives are almost too busy! Drop me a comment and let me know when's a good time for you!
Honorable mention: Bethany. But I'm not sure how to call Germany, or how much it will cost.

Top Five Reasons These Guys Rock*

5. Brass quintet with a drum set. Need I say more?
4. The music they play (music by Frank Zappa, Milton Babbit serial compositions, really groovy commissions, etc, etc, etc) is amazing. They make the concept of "new music" so much less esoteric and frightening, and so much more hip.
3. Their commitment to furthering the repertoire of the brass quintet is unparalleled. They have commissioned many, many works from composers in order to keep the genre alive and kicking.
2. As far as personalities go, this is the nicest group of five guys I have ever met. At the concert last night, each and every one of them made the effort to come talk to me and see how I'm doing.
1. They're so musically tight. And every single player is so solid, yet committed to the ideal that ensemble is most important.

*Inspired by the show we went to see last night, and the recital they're putting on tonight. It was, and will be, awesome.

Top Five Things I Kinda Screwed Up This Weekend

5. Was a bit of a fold at my quartet's wedding gig yesterday. I need to work on being so much more focused and consistent. Sheesh.
4. Didn't get enough sleep, and I have to practice a long time tonight and get up early to teach tomorrow.
3. Forgot to leave time for reading and studying for my Baroque music class. Test is on Thursday.
2. Didn't even think about the book I needed to have half-read for African Music.
1. Cut my hair too short and can't seem to fix the parts that look goofy.

On a good note, I did pull out and tinker around on my mandolin. Doing that helps me reset my love of music and get back into it mentally.

Top Five Curiosities as of Late:

5. Is it really, honestly the MO of every service industry to give you 6 HOUR windows of time during which to expect a representative, only to completely miss the time period??? I'm really starting to feel at one with the Seinfled episode in which Kramer deliberately avoids being home while the cable guy (or whoever) is forced to make repeated visits. Welcome to New York.
4. How is one to know when the 7-line runs express if the MTA officials never feel like changing the signage to reflect the operation of the train?
3. I recieved phone call from these people, so I tried to retrun their call. No one at the office ever answers; no answering machine is available. How am I supposed to follow up on this, exactly?
2. I've lived here in this apartment for almost 2 months, and have not seen a single bill. What's up with that? I KNOW they know my address! And I know they want their money!
1. My fellow employees and I have all had our hours cut at the bookstore because the "CEO" THINKS (very big emphasis on "thinks") there will be construction on the store front. Let's do some math, shall we? Complete lack of data or evidence of construction + woman who makes all the unilateral decisions for the store + natural tendency for making decisions on a whim = time to find a new job!

Top 5 Things I like about Hamburg:
5. The canals, the harbor
4. NDR at the Musikhalle (such an awesome orch and beautiful hall)
3. Fall/spring at the Alster and surroundings (the lake here)
2. Sternschanze and Hamburger Berg, and the good times out there! (2 streets with many good restaurants and/or bars)
1. Exciting city with always something going on, be it a city-planned event or places to go, but not too big

Top 5 Things I miss about Madison:
5. Farmers Markets (tied with general liberal atmosphere)
4. The nature bike paths and everything around the lakes
3. Springtime (on Library Mall and at the Union)
2. Espresso Royale (and all the times spent there!)
1. My friends and the parties/hanging out, and good times goofing around in the cat house!

Geez, when I got started on that list, it was harder than I thought to narrow it down to only 5 things. Go Madison!

4. Williamsburg, Brooklyn
3. LES, Manhattan
2. Washington Heights/Inwood, Manhattan
1. Astoria, Queens

I. Top Five Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Moved
5. Live as close to Manhattan as possible. It may seem like it's not a big deal to live a little out of the way-- but it is! Very much so, and for a variety of reasons.
4. It is quite possible to own a car in the outer burroughs.
3. Brokers and apartment leasors like to know that you have money. If you don't, schedule a week in New York with someone who does.
2. Decide which bank to use based on proximity to your apartment, NOT based on an advertising campaign.
1. The cost of living doubles in comparison to the midwest. But, wages don't necessarily reflect this increase.

Top Five Tuesday Annoyances
5. The interminable quality of each of my engagements. Although I like my classes, and obviously lessons are awesome, everything just seems to go on...forever.
4. Getting to trombone choir and thinking "shit! I knew I forgot to practice something!"
3. Wishing it were Wednesday already.
2. Needing more time to swim/bike home/just in general get some exercise.
1. Knowing no matter how hard I worked on my lesson stuff, it's still too early in the week to be acceptable for performance.

5. I got to school early and had time to warm up.
4. We might have brass quintet rehearsal after all.

Top Five Internet Time Wasters:

5. Aimless clicking. It happens sometimes, when I'm feeling lazy and unmotivated.
4. Facebook. It's very popular, and there's so much going on that it's hard to keep up!
3. MySpace. The ultimate in wasted time.
2. Hotmail/gMail
1. Blogs. I have about 10 that I check on each day, and I spend time writing posts for my own. Not that this time is wasted, per se.... but you know what I mean.

Davis' Top Five Stay-Healthy Goals

5. Get 8.5 hours of sleep a night
4. Bring lunch to work everyday
3. Spend money only when necessary (such as for social engagements and alcohol)
2. Make sure to take the proper vitamins each day
1. Eat healthfully/work on consuming a balanced diet

Top Five Reasons to Love the Top Five Blog:

5. The ability to look back and wonder: was I really so saccharine back then? And is it just me, or was my writing style a little bit unfocused?
4. Well, who can resist the urge to make Top Five Lists?
3. All the cool kids were into it! Well, most of them, anyway.
2. The retro background! There's an old-fashioned archive link! And blogger didn't even have it's icon yet! All this is to say... we were there in the early days, before blogging became all the rage.
1. It's such a kooky little reminder of times of yore. Memories are just a click away.

Oct 2, 2006

Top Five Returns! Again! (Eventually, we can do a Top Five Top Five Blog Reboots)

Top Five Thoughts of the Day:
5. Time to get my teeth cleaned. Sheesh.
4. Kitties are the best. Evah. Especially when they distract you from writing your ethno paper by sitting on all your references, looking at you pitifully, and mwrorring.
3. The standard bell pattern (long long short long long long short) of Southern Ewe (Ghana) drumming relates to African sensibility by its cyclical as well as structural and cultural function. The repeated pattern allows for the other ensemble members to fit into the groove and add their part without disrupting the overall flow of the dance, and can be seen as a metaphor for how the individual functions within West African community life.
2. Horny. Sheesh.
1. When you're really busy and really focused on getting through the day or the week or whatever's next, do you get the feeling that everything's holding together...just barely? I feel like I've got everything together and under control, but yet it's still just hardly over the line of 'falling apart into a big ugly mess' and 'in waaaay over my head and about to drown'.
Eh. It's more fun that way.

Top Five Top Five Lists to Make:

5. Top Five Favorite NPR Announcers
4. Top Five Pieces for Brass Quintet
3. Top Five Favorite Letters of the Alphabet

Top Five Things with No Apparent Relevance

5. Right now I am listening to Suzanne Vega.
4. Yesterday I decided to put my mouse on the left side of my keyboard. I wonder if this will make me slightly more ambidextrous, or if the hemispheres in my brain will form new pathways from one to the other.
3. We are switching to a new online grocery service. The old one kind of sucks. Maybe I'll post about it on my other blog.
2. I'm hungry. I think I'll eat some cereal and then head to Manhattan to pick up my check and do some banking.
1. It's really nice to have a few days off!

3. Mass transportation has its ups and downs, but at leat I don't own a car and don't have to think about gas prices.
2. There are some AMAZING vegetarian restaurants around town.
1. The opportunities. Just need to find them, but they are here.

Top Five Things I Hate about Life in New York:

1. I am so lonely. I need to make some friends. (see #2)

4. my recital... haven't practiced it in a very long time (see below) and I have a rehearsal with my accompanist this Friday
3. concerto competition prelims tomorrow!
2. making tapes for summer music festivals
1. The Future and it's possibilities. Will I really be able to have a life in music?

Coming soon... a happy, positive post, with any luck.

Feb 5, 2005

This is going to be way saccharine. I apologize in advance.

Lauren's Top Five Favorite Things...about the beginning of a new relationship:
5. The awkwardness. There's just something special about it.
4. Catching, out of the corner of your eye, the other person staring at you and smiling.
3. Little tender hand-holding moments.
2. The tendrils of what appear to be really great private jokes in the making.
1. The electricity that surrounds the first kiss. Or is it magnetism? Either way there's a silence before and after better than any drug.

Jan 29, 2005

Davis' Top Five Things that Made Her Want to Cry This Week:

5. The State of My Finances. Western reduced our pay checks by $20 because they mistakenly issued checks to everyone over Christmas break. Also, my stipend was about a grand less than I thought it would be. It's getting to be around the time when I figure out how to have an income via a 40 hour/week job that doesn't focus on my horn. A day job!
4. One of my students told me that he returned from a Pro-Life March in Washington D.C., taken with a church group. Fortunatly, he told me at the end of the lesson that he didn't really go for the political cause, but rather for the free trip to D.C.
3. Jules and I got to the last episode of DS9, season 6. Acutally, I did cry over this episode... does that mean I should take this one off the list?
2. Making tapes for summer festivals. Listening back, I realize that I still have lots and lots of work to, but my time in school is running out. Help!
1. Interrupting said taping by cutting my lip. So, not only can I not play the horn, I can't even audition for places that will help me learn! But, at least the stress of making that tape is alleviated for now.

Jan 24, 2005

It's been a few years, and I've changed, so...

Lauren's Top Five Favorite Fiction Novels (revised):

4. Hocus Pocus- Kurt Vonnegut
3. Skinny Legs and All- Tom Robbins
2. One Hundred Years of Solitude- Gabriel Garcia Marquez
1. The Master and Margarita- Nicholai Bulgakov

I wish I could put a female author on that list. But, Tom Robbins is strongly feminist and HDM has got a strong girl protagonist...

Anyway.

Lauren's Top Five Favorite Composers (revised):
5. Leonard Bernstein
4. Johannes Brahms
3. Igor Stravinsky
2. Dmitri Shostakovich
1. Sergei Prokofiev

I can't put any women up there either, for more obvious reasons. Not until I start hearing more of Felicia's work. :)

Woo! Top Five revisited!

Davis' top five favorite things to do on MLK 2005:
5. NOT teach lessons. Especially since they're the Monday lessons. Silly children.
4. Minesweeper. The ultimate waste of time.
3. Spend time with Kitty. She's a big fan of me since I gave her tuna a couple of days ago.
2. Practice my recital. I'm getting mighty tired of devoting my attention solely to cerpts lately. It was great to be able to reunite with my kick-ass sonatas.
1. Sleep in. I haven't been getting enough sleep lately, so I was sooo happy to get those extra several hours.

Jan 12, 2005

Top five things I miss about Madison:
5. Food carts! What I wouldn't give for some Pad Thai from the Thai House right about now...

3. State Street. People watching, no cars, independant bookstores...
2. Espresso Royale!!! There is no good chai in Kalamazoo. I am considering becoming a chai-wallah, so at least people would know what they are missing!!

Aug 11, 2002

5. Saw Ibai, a spanish guy I know from our orchestra, in the Library. Someone I got to know on our Russia Trip....one of several that I got to know, but unfortunately, even after the trip, still don't really do anything with. It's a pity, but we're actually getting together this week.
4. Tried to use the ATM machine, and it pooped out on me twice (in 2 different banks), and the account printer wouldn't work either (that you can print out your statement with). Bad aura today??
3. History class was cancelled. (woohoo!) With vacations, that means that next week will have been 3 weeks since I went to class last. Gotta love the German University system.
2. Realized it's Memorial Day today. Surprisingly enough, no one here wants to commemorate American soldiers that died/fought in wars. Hmm, hehe :)
1. Ate breakfast at a hotel and met Heidi's parents. Had an interesting current events talk. Nice that I finally got to meet them.
Sorry about the seemingly uninteresting blog, but I felt like posting, and this is what came to mind, my day to day life, today ;)

Davis' Top Five Most Intense Experiences That Occured on May 23, 2002:
5. Alex coming over at 3 in the morning. As a result, I didn't really sleep and instead talked to him until it was light outside. He's a nice boy.
4. Talking to my old horn teacher for 4 hours! Learned alot about the way things REALLY are in the real horn world, which sounds pretty scary. But I'll be okay.
3. Just being at my parent's house. Things have really changed, but they still seem the same in many different ways.
2. Visiting an ex-boyfriend from freshman year of college (Steve Clark). Lots of reminiscing... lots of remembering at once why it was that we dated and broke up.
1. Seeing an ex-boyfriend from high school (Tony Price). He has a DAUGHTER now and also a bar in his basement, which was the only thing he felt compelled to say to me. It's weird seeing how life has effected the people I knew really well in high school.

Davis' Top Five Things Interfering with her Complete and Total Happiness:
5. being sleepy, which is something that I haven't gotten over in what seems like weeks!
4. Alex. I don't know what's up with that kid. Lots of questions-- Are we growing apart? Does he not enjoy spending time with me anymore? (Also included in this is the distance I feel from my friends. I think I concentrate too much on being with Alex and not enough on the other wonderful people in my life).
3. the weather-- it is may, why can't it be sunshiney and warm and SPRING???
2. brass juries
1. schoolwork/finals week. I can't believe it's almost here (mostly because of reason #3)

Apr 24, 2002

Bethany's Top 5 Things she would like to start on fire (inspired by Jerry's posting) but won't:
5. My Horn. Not because I don't like it (playing is actually going well now), but because it would be cool to see. Simply curiousity
4. My Hair. I know it would burn quickly and wouldn't be too comfy, but it would be cool to have a picture of that.
3. My Bed. I think it would burn pretty well.
2. My Computer. Might not burn too well, but the sparks would be way cool.
1. A Strawberry. Not sure about the logistics of that, but I wonder if it would smell or turn colors, and what the after result would be.

Apr 16, 2002

Does anyone even remember that this exists?

Davis' Top Five Things that She is Worried About:
5. The stress of traveling, especially with immediate family members of boyfriend.
4. Packing that goddamn sleeping back in my suitcase, which is roughly the same size as said sleeping bag. In other words, not having enough space for clothing for 10 days.
3. Finding time and space to practice in Europe. I know it seems like a silly way to spend a vacation, but it is necessary
2. Coming back from Europe angry at Alex, and not being able to play my horn
1. The insane lack of money that is holding me back right now. Not sure what to do about it.

Why are all of my worries related to this trip? Shouldn't I be excited??? Maybe once I get through the next couple of days, I will realize that it will be infinitely more fun than it is stressful right now. Also, I need to keep in mind that traveling is always stressful, even when you're not doing any planning or paying for anything (i.e. when I traveled with my family back in the day)

1. My Passport fiasco. I had to give it up to get a visa for Russia, but my mom's coming to visit in the time that it'll be gone. So I've been calling so many people...blah blah blah...so as it turns out I won't get to go to Rome with my mom :(

3. Pile into a car with several friends and head off downtown or to the beach, and have long discussions about life, the universe....or maybe nothing at all.
2. Experience the feeling of being home. Colors, smells, people. The way things are that makes me feel a little more complete, a little more relaxed.
1. Pick a grey, windy day at La Jolla Cove, sit on a rock, watch the ocean breaking against the cliffs. Wax philosophical. Remember something I used to know about life before I went off to college and became petty and selfish, and apply it.

4. Expecting a ride to the capital, but not getting one because Joe's car had a flat tire and having to leave the bass behind and walk to the capital. and being late once I got there. and not getting a warmup. grr
3. Relatives. State Street Brats. Enough said.
2. Conducting video. realizing that I can't sing solfege or cue on random beat patterns.
1. Conversation with father. Finding out that I can't go home until the 23rd unless I want to catch a red-eye on the 20th. This semester will never end!!! Argh. I feel like crying.

On a positive note, the care package I got from my aunt and uncle contains M&M cookies. yee-ah.

3. The Wrong Tower of Ogg Episode
2. Driving a golf cart through a patio area (chairs and tables everywhere! mass pandemonium ensues!) --this is number 1 on my most embarrassing list but it's not quite as stupid as...
1. Throwing away my keys, ID card, ATM card, money and various other important day-to-day items at a food court in a Milwaukee area mall. Yes folks, this is recent. I still feel a little like crying and I definitely need a hug.

Sep 21, 2001

That's so sweet, Grant.

Yes, it's true, everyone: I do wrestle. The last match took place at BJ and Ian's party a few Fridays back, and if tonight's party doesn't live up, I'll do it again too.

Okay, since I have been very much cheered up by Grant's post, I shall pass this along to the next victim:

Davis' Top Five Reasons Why She Loves Lauren:
5. She is emotional (in a good way--cry when you need to, etc) but not manic depressive or anything.
4. She is very thoughtful.
3. She *thinks* about the world and the people in it, and is very intelligent.
2. She's compassionate and a loyal friend.
1. She's FUNNY!! Gotta love incidents like the "Danse Ridicule" and barret thing.

Lauren's Top Five Things about Today, Sept 20 2001:
5. Contrabass Balalaika RULES!!!
4. Bass trombone. I actually made it sound good today. At least, relatively good to what I've been doing before.
3. The crazy funny urge I had to go running before RFO...and had to take my music folder with me so I felt like a complete ass (along with the fact that I'm a terrible runner and I had to stop every 200 feet)
2. Practicing tonight. Something's clicked on the De Meij and I feel like I can do it justice now.
1. Brass Quintet: Danse Ridule. Enough said.

Davis' Top Five Favorite Things About Grant:
5. Consistency. Grant never decides anything on a whim, but is very thoughtful about issues, and therefore can be counted on to maintain veiwpoints.
4. Intelligence. Grant is brilliant, and knows alot of neat random facts.
3. Great sense of humor. (If you can catch it, but if you do, it's priceless.)
2. Wonderful musician. He makes good suggestions when you ask for an opinion, and is a virtuoso tubist.
1. Good friend. Very reliable, and likes to listen and offers good advice.

Sep 10, 2001

Davis' Top Five Things She Likes About Ben (sounds like his visit with Clare didn't go so well?)
5. He doesn't live by anyone else's standards or thoughts on how life should be lived. He just lives his own life without typical rules, because he's already thought about what normal societal rules mean, and whether or not they are necessary.
4. He asks very appropriate questions and manages to get people to open up to him (something I still haven't learned to do, but admire).
3. He is very passionate about music, a quality that I really appreciate in people.
2. He does care. Most people don't, and I'm glad that there is someone compassionate like that in the world.
1. He is very empathetic. In general, he reacts to his surroundings and the people he communicates with, instead of being void and removed from the world.

Where are Chris, Grant and Alex?

Lauren's Top Five Reasons Not to Practice Tonight:
5. homework. well, i don't really care that much and i don't have to do very much either, but at least if i put it on the list i look studious and concerned about my educational welfare.

3. staying at home is so much more relaxing. especially when you're alone, you have a good book, and the stereo is at your disposal.

2. lesson tomorrow
1. of course, because i want to become a great musician!

and therefore the pros outweigh the cons (although the lip sore is a mighty heavy excuse) so i shall now head off to humanities...

Sep 9, 2001

It's cute that Ben and Bethany were apparently posting at the same time. Kind of like those "meanwhile, on the other side of the world" lines in a story book.... I would like to mention that it has been a very powerful experience getting to know the two of you-- and all of my other friends. The fact that I love you all so much in such a short amount of time is wonderful and exciting and happy.

Davis' Top Five Things Missed about Bethany:

2. She's a great listener (very sympathetic) and I felt that I could talk to her about my struggles with school, people, life, etc
1. She's one of my best friends and favorite people-- this needs to be a broad, non specific answer because there are a million and one little things I miss, and this is the best way to sum it all up and cram it into one number on the list.

p.s.-- Ben, I was wondering what sonnet that was. It is very beautiful, and I am glad you have it on your list. Also, I was unaware that I was the inspiration o Pathway! If this is true, I am glad because I like that song.

4. Shostakovich
3. Richard Strauss
2. Beethoven
1. Brahms

Wow, that is so traditional! Can you tell I'm a horn player (Strauss, Hill)?

Could I please see a similar list from Ben?

To answer Ben's #3, I have no idea... perhaps it is the result of the "like seeks like" philosophy that is certainly prevalant in the way in which people seek their companions.

Now, Davis' Top Five Songs That Have Been Stuck In My Head This Weekend:
5. "Man of Constant Sorrow" from the O Brother soundtrack
4. That melody from "Shrek" (Mootz and I went to see it)
3. Mozart's Third Horn Concerto (because I just performed it)
2. "Elegy for Horn Alone" By Doug
1. "Come Up To My Place" from "On The Town" by Bernstein (NOT happy about this one)

Davis' Top Five Things That Have Annoyed Her About Being Home
5. Sitting in the car for three hours. I've lost my tolerance.
4. Sorting through my eight million boxes to see what I wanted to bring to Madison, and then repacking it. I have managed to accumulate an amazing amount of junk, and have created some stupid kind of sentimental attachment to them.
3. Waking up at SIX IN THE MORNING to play at church
2. Had to go "back to school" shopping with my sister and my dad, and we all have very different methods of shopping (I get what I want and leave the store asap, Kate wants what is most expensive and then looks at all the clothing, everywhere and anywhere they sell them, Dad scours the store for bargains and tries to get Kate to do the same, despite eher previously mentioned method of purchasing items)
1. Everyone in my family talks at once and doesn't listen to eachother! A cause for many fights.

I must mention that I'm not having too terrible of a time-- It's nice to be home and see my family.

To answer Ben's # 1 question, I guess I was thinking more in terms of performers...and not composers, and so now I will make a list of my top five composers.

Lauren's Top Five Favorite Composers:
5. Johann DeMeij
4. Maurice Ravel
3. Aaron Copland
2. Leonard Bernstein
1. Sergei Prokofiev
hmm..that ended up a lot differently than I expected (not so much Russian), but I tried to be true to myself.
as for the random account of waterskiing, ignore it. it reappeared on my regular webpage.

Ah..this one is looong overdue (but of course, this is my first opportunity to post it to the world:

Lauren's Top Five Things Overheard All Summer:
5. That's a lot of beer! (said by a little boy, arms akimbo, to his friend regarding the display of the available alcohol at Casa de Pico, a mexican restaurant)
4. Love me, love my goats.
3. Oh my god, whaat a frrrreak!
2. Okay, let's do Africa.
1. Anton Dvojak must have been a great lover....of nature.

hehe...hey guys, guess what? today i waterskiied! I actually got up! (and then promptly fell down again and got my bathing suit up my...ahem, nevermind) wow! (everyone, just for my sake, be impressed for a little while. thanks)

Davis' Top Five Favorite Things About Her Friends:
5. Even when I think a thought or idea of mine is stupid, they're willing to try it out and impress me with how thoughtful they are!
4. Similar tastes in stuff, for the most part (i.e. books, music, shared inside jokes, etc)
3. They are all wonderful, brilliant people.
2. They really listen to me, and give good advice when I need it.
1. I feel soo very comfortable with all of them, and it really is a nice feeling (although that may sound cliched)

Thanks for your posts, guys.

Bethany's Top 5 Fav Books:
5. The Awakening
4. Watership Down
3. Catch 22
2. Catcher in the Rye
1. Brave New World

I actually could only think of 4 that I really liked, so until I think of anther one that bumps number 5 out, that will have to do. That's how it goes....

hmm...well, this is lame and a little cliched, but anyway, here are my top five favorite pop/rock/alternative/etc (in other words excluding jazz and classical) bands:

Lauren's Top Five Bands
5. Tower of Power
4. The Beatles
3. Radiohead
2. Sublime
1. CAKE

To counter this there is this list, favorite musical artists, excluding bands and including musicians of ALL genres. This is a little harder.

Lauren's Top Five Musical Artists
5. JJ Johnson
4. Beck
3. Simon and Garfunkel
2. Dave Brubeck
1. Ella Fitzgerald

tres dificil! that also tends to change daily (although cake and ella will pretty much always reign supreme)

Say hello to "Top Five Blog"! Hopefully this site will be frequently visited, and lots of our friends will take the time to stop in and make a few Top Five Lists of their own. As of yet, there are no rules, so post away!
